Identification Results for Duration Models with Multiple Spells or Time–varying Covariates

چکیده

The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the identifiability of duration models with multiple spells. We prove that the results of Elbers and Ridder (1982) and Heckman and Singer (1984) can be generalized to multi–spell models with lagged duration dependence. We also prove that without lagged duration dependence, the identification result does not depend on moment conditions or tail conditions on the mixing distribution. This result is in contrast to Ridder’s (1990) result for single–spells model. We also illustrate that Ridder’s result can be overturned by time–varying covariates.

Proper Specification of Nonproportional Hazards Corrections in Duration Models

Parametric and nonparametric duration models assume proportional hazards: The e ect of a covariate on the hazard rate stays constant over time. Researchers have developed techniques to test and correct nonproportional hazards, including interacting the covariates with some function of time. Including this interaction term means that the specification now involves time-varying covariates, and th...

Modelling Multiple Unemployment Spells from Longitudinal Survey Data

1. INTRODUCTION The modelling problem addressed in this paper has been called correlated failure-time modelling, multivariate survival modelling, multiple spells modelling, or a recurrent events problem, and is studied in biomedical Generally this type of modelling is required for data that arise in time-to-event studies when two or more events happen to the same subject. In such a case, the fa...

A Monte Carlo study on non-parametric estimation of duration models with unobserved heterogeneity

We conduct extensive Monte Carlo experiments on non-parametric estimations of duration models with unknown duration dependence and unknown mixing distribution for unobserved heterogeneity. We propose a full non-parametric maximum likelihood approach, based on time-varying lagged explanatory covariates from observational data. By utilising this data-based identification source, we find that both...

Duration Models and Differential Evolution in the Analysis of Large Data Sets

Two measures of unemployment duration were obtained for each individual from data collected by Istat through the Quarterly Labour Force Survey. One measure was the length of on-going spells of unemployment, declared by the interviewed individual in a first wave and suitably adjusted considering information in a second wave (Spell Answers). The other was the time elapsed between the dates of the...

Impact of common mental disorders on sickness absence in an occupational cohort study

OBJECTIVES Common mental disorders are associated with impaired functioning and sickness absence. We examine whether sub-clinical as well as clinical psychiatric morbidity predict long spells of sickness absence for both psychiatric and non-psychiatric illness. We also examine whether recent common mental disorders and those present on two occasions have a stronger association with sickness abs...
